History:
Born to unknown parents and orphaned at an early age, Mello really is a boy without an identity; ready to create his own. Naturally intelligent, but unbalanced, he was swept through a succession of orphanages and came to two conclusions: a) nobody will ever take care of you but you, and b) chaos and anarchy are the natural order of the world. Eventually, his outstanding talents were recognized and he was sent to the Wammy´s House For Gifted Children in England. Here, he was included in an intellectual race alongside other talented students to follow in the footsteps of L, the world´s three most famous detectives. The hilarity of the whole concept dawned on him a few years too late.

Mello was at first intrigued by the place. The tasks they were given were challenging, and he took a natural liking to criminology (and crime itself). And he even made what could have been called his first real friend and accomplice, Matt, a boy whose complete lack of passion fascinated him. Too bad it was also the time where zealous Mello had to discover how fragile his hubris really was, as his hopes to come out on top of the game were again and again shattered by Near, the true white-haired resident wonder boy. Unable to accept him as an equal or even as superior, and repulsed by his tacit nature, Mello decided to loathe him, which he did, and does, with a flaming passion. His high aspirations completely crashed and burned as L met his end chasing Kira, the serial murderer with the god complex. Mello was faced with the option to work alongside Near, or bust. He decided to bust.

Out on the street again at age 15, Mello decided to deepen his criminology studies on the inside of things. Or maybe, he simply really, really wanted to own a gun. On top of that, he was fifteen and broke and didn´t feel like giving blowjobs in the street. (Which he ended up doing once or twice nonetheless, but well, what ever the situation calls for.) He eventually caught the eye of L.A. based mob boss Rob Loss by presenting him with the head of a crown witness in a duffle bag. It was obvious that he was either very talented, or a complete whackjob. Turned out, he was both.
Mello found a new role model and mentor in the mafia boss, and soon felt he was even more close to his own nature than L had been. As he rose in the organization, his objection was still to turn his knowledge and power against ~~Near~~ Kira...but it was very apparent, even to Mello himself, that he was a much better criminal than detective. A few times, he was even tempted to drop the whole catching-Kira-serving-mankind-angle and accept this life, if it hadn´t been for his desire to beat Near to the win.

Having risen to be second in command in his organization and even pretty much having Rob Loss in his pocket, Mello decided it was time to force Kira´s hand with the kidnapping plot. Even more so since Near was getting ready to corner Kira, too. But Mello had a missile, so there. Mello would always remember the day when he got his hands on the Death Note and sent the SPK agents tumbling down as one of the happiest days of his life. All went well, up to the point where his L.A. hideout was finally raided by the very Police officers that he had, in his hubris, called useless. In a hideout rigged with explosives, Mello was faced with the decision to win or lose, to get caught or go down in flames.

Or not. Because a second later, he woke up to find himself in a place that´s...a little bit like prison, maybe, but much cooler and with a surprising stack of old and new interesting acquaintances.

Personality:
Having dealt with matters of life and death (usually death) most of his life, Mello is quite the survivalist. He´s emotional, but not sentimental. Mello is adventurous, zealous, and ambitious to the point of criminal insanity, a side of himself that he is very much in touch with. He is driven and obsessed, but no mindless maniac. Despite being tense most of the time, he does have a playful side, likes to be challenged, and is not above glee when he comes out on top of things (or people). And he is a complete materialist.

Mello is clever and calculating and has great interest in manipulating people. Even though he´s not the biggest friend of humankind there ever was, he likes to communicate and get to know people, even if it´s only for the purpose of sizing them up. Except when he is currently busy with something, in which case fuck the hell off, because he does have a one-track-mind and gets really focused on his goals. Although he is furiously proud, he´s not afraid to get down in the dirt to get what he wants.

His attitude towards others is cocky and arrogant, but he knows how to make friends, although he might not be the best friend to have. He can be cool and cautious as well as quick-tempered and easily offended. Always on the edge, Mello tends to act too rash and react too forceful. Certain people, and above all his rival Near, tend to bring that reckless and careless side out in him, which can lead to horrific results. Mello tends to obsess over his goals to the point where he forgets about precautions, or how his actions could affect other people. He has a fragile, unstable ego and suffers from insecurities that can be almost crippling at times. He´s probably not aware of how irrational and vulnerable he really is.
